anniversary.
LA FORTUNIANS...we are grateful to have our grandparents who left a good step before us.
Work hardly and prepared a settlement for everyone and for our future generation. Now,
Let me refresh your thoughts with his history of what this place now a days and in the past.
There was a man,a visionary, determined and very optimistic believed that Life is what we
make it.This man along with his loyal relatives started his journey from leon, ilo ilo before vthe second world war in the year 1936 toi be exact and had his first stopover in the island of
mindanao particularly baliki, midsayap, north cotabato.with him were his wife,Two sons and
a daugther and few of his nearest relatives.settled in that particular place with a desire to own
parcel of land for a living. This man was no other that the late ALBERTO CAPILITAN.The family stayed with their muslim friend and became the closest friend of Datu Mantil Delangalin of
Libungan,North Cotabato and considered him as an eldest son of Datu among the ilonggos
friend of the Datu. The family were given 24 hectares of land along national highway in Km.54,
San mateo, pikit,North Cotabato now municipality of aleosan for a period of eight years.
During the world war II the ambitious and courageous leader continued their journey and
Settled in salaman ,libak,Sultan kudarat as thier second stopover. After world war II together
with his loyal relatives they went back to aleosan,North cotabato where ther children pursue
their education.Fortunately only his daugther finished her studies and earned a baccalaureate
degree at Southern Chistian College in Midsayap,North cotabato. The group pushed their desire to continue their journey, with their families loaded into two trucks with foods and
other needs for their consumption they proceeded to Malalag,Davao del sur but unluckily
stayed only for 2 months as they felt that the land was not fitted for his men and loading again
his families they moved to Bankerohan,Monkayo became a Municipality of Montevista,Davao
del norte.
Just like stepping a ladder they climbed another step seeking for a better place to live in
for all the members of their journey.Thru God's grace they finally ended their journey in
Madan ay of upper Lugom ,December 15,1954 with only heads of families and leaving their
wives and children in Bankerohan,Montevista,Davao del norte.Few months later, after the
assurance of Datu Venancio Montes the succesor of Datu Madan ay once a native leader of
the said barangay, the group of Late Alberto Caalim Capilitan went back to Bankerohan and
fetched their families and brought them and settled in Madan ay.
These group of chistian migrants suffered much hardship on their daily needs for a
living,They even experience having hot pepper as a subtitute for salt and"ubod"of patikan
tree as their rice and other root crops namely sweet potato, cassava and bananas until they
were able to harvest rice and corn.
This gigantic and fearless group with their able leader Late Alberto Capilitan overcame
hardships, living with their native neighbors headed by Datu Venancio Montes, they were able
to occupy and later owned parcel of land.Their dreams and vision realized. In the early years
of stay,Late Alberto Capilitan dreamed of making this place a better place for all his future
generations.Sites for schools, churches, and cemetery were all established. He wanted that this place will be his children and his children's'children .He died at the age of 110 in May 28,1980 at Brokenshire Hospital Davao city and was buried here in La Fortuna.
Before this barangay became La Fortuna, this was being named Madan ay in 1948-1954 after the name of the native leader Datu Madan-ay,and later became Lugom because of Lugom River. The name La fortuna derived from a spanish word that in English term it is Fortunate.
Why this place became a fortunate? It was because 90% of his relatives and friends were all intact in this God given land for these fearless migrants from Leon Ilo-ilo.
